In a report released to President Barack Obama on Thursday, his Science and Technology Advisory Council noted that the United States needs to invest more in nanotechnology if it is to maintain global leadership in this promising field.

The Council reported that between 2003 and 2008, public and private investments in nanotechnology in the US increased annually by about 18%, compared to 27% worldwide.

The Council made recommendations that would help reposition the US These recommendations include: increased global funding to coordinate research and development in nanotechnology, increased attention to commercialization of products made with nanotechnology, and incentives for foreign scientists and engineers studying in the United States so that they can stay after their training is completed.

The United States has more nanotechnology patents than any other nation, but according to the report, China has recently surpassed the United States in the number of patents applied for.

To achieve strategic funding, the NNI proposed a $ 2 million increase in the budget, from the current figure of $ 3 million. The report also recommended that the NNI increase its investment in nanomaterial manufacturing by 100% over the next five years.

The report also calls for better methods to track the impact of nanotechnology on the economy, environment and health.
